When districts requested that we create an assessment tool, we spent a great amount of time visiting with them regarding existing assessment options and the pros and cons of each. What we discovered was that most districts were using a combination of third party developed automated testing tools and district developed paper based testing.
The benefit of the third party assessments is that they provided district wide reports that were often used to benchmark students growth. The con was that teachers often felt that the assessments were not reflective of what was being taught in their classrooms. Regarding the district developed assessments teachers felt they were very reflective of their classes, but unfortunately they were not able to analyze them from a district perspective.
The core goal of BuildYourOwnAssessment is to bridge the gap between traditional third party assessments and district defined assessments. BYOA is not a question bank, your educators create their own assessments with questions aligned to state standards, district benchmarks, or actual curriculum, your students can take the assessments online, on scan form, or on paper, and finally the system can produce the type of district wide reports typically associated with third party assessments.
